The Rills - Bones

The Rills have just released their new song ‘Bones’ on Halloween which is very fitting for the name of the song.

The Rills are a London-based indie rock band with popular songs such as ‘The Angler’ and ‘Pyro’ with an average of 2-3 million streams which is a huge deal. My favourite has to be ‘spit me out’ from their 2022 era. But this new song may have just overtaken it…

Bones I'd say is somewhat a love song where warmth and brightness in the day comes from the partner. Like in the lyrics “Where you gone?” I'm looking in the shade. There ain’t nothing else to brighten up my day” and that they wanna be together forever till they’re bones.

But it is also a toxic relationship where one of them is a narcissist and in the phrase “ I didn’t kill my demons to be killed by yours” it implies that they are being dragged down with them and even though they try to be “illusive like a needle in the hay” they keep getting sucked back in “But boy you’ve got a face i can’t ignore”.

There is a heavy use of words relating to heat and fire such as “burning stare”, “solar flare” and “burn a planet”. These lyrics could indicate a burning passion for each other or perhaps a disaster. Either way, it's a very catchy, artic monkey vibed, cool song.

The chorus is definitely one to be stuck in our heads for a long time with the catchy lyrics “ I didn’t kill my demons to be killed by yours, you're a narcissist but boy you've got a face I can't ignore”. I love it when indie rock songs use the adjective 'narcissist' to describe someone in a negative light as well as apathetic which is also commonly used.

If you haven’t already you should definitely give Bones and The Rills a listen, you will not regret it.
